Vitamin D
–
Take D3 with a meal containing fat. More is not better: sustained very high intakes can raise blood calcium to harmful levels.
Estimating your vitamin D need
Vitamin D is produced in skin exposed to UVB light, and very little comes from food. Above roughly 37 degrees latitude, skin produces little or none through winter months, which is why shortfall is common across northern Europe and the northern United States.
This calculator estimates risk from the factors that actually matter: latitude, sun exposure, skin tone and oily fish intake. Darker skin requires substantially longer exposure for the same production, and indoor work removes the opportunity entirely.
A maintenance intake of 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily suits most adults through winter. Correcting a diagnosed deficiency is a different matter and requires a blood test and medical guidance rather than a calculator.
