Frame size and why it appears in weight tables

Frame size estimates skeletal build from the ratio of height to wrist circumference. It appeared in mid-twentieth-century insurance weight tables as an adjustment, because two people of identical height can have meaningfully different skeletal builds.

The measure is crude. Wrist circumference is a rough proxy for bone structure, the thresholds vary between sources, and the adjustment it produces is small, typically around five percent either way.

It is included here because ideal weight tables still reference it and people encounter the term. In practice, body fat percentage and waist to height ratio describe your situation far better than skeletal frame does.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure frame size?
Divide height in centimetres by wrist circumference in centimetres, then compare against thresholds that differ by sex.
Does frame size change your ideal weight?
Only slightly, roughly five percent either way in the tables that use it.
Can I change my frame size?
No. Skeletal structure is fixed in adulthood. Muscle and fat are what change.
Is big boned a real thing?
Frame differences exist but are small. They do not explain large differences in bodyweight.
