Splitting daily targets across meals

Total daily intake determines whether you gain or lose weight. How you distribute it affects muscle protein synthesis, satiety and how easy the day is to follow.

The relevant threshold is protein per meal. Roughly 25 to 40 g of complete protein, supplying about 2.5 to 3 g of leucine, maximally stimulates synthesis. Below that the meal contributes protein but does not fully trigger the response, which is why splitting 150 g across six small meals is less effective than across four larger ones.

Research on distribution has found that an even spread produces greater daily muscle protein synthesis than a pattern where most protein arrives at dinner, which is the typical Western eating pattern.

Frequently asked questions

How many meals per day is best?
Three to five works for most people. The constraint is that each should clear roughly 25 g of protein.
Does meal frequency affect metabolism?
No meaningfully. The thermic effect of food scales with total intake, not the number of sittings.
Should meals be equal in size?
Roughly even protein is supported by the distribution research. Calories and carbohydrates can be weighted around training or preference.
Is skipping breakfast bad?
Not inherently, but it removes a feeding opportunity and makes hitting a protein target harder in the remaining meals.
