The Army body fat standard

The US Army uses a circumference-based tape method to estimate body fat when a soldier exceeds the screening weight for their height. For men the measurement uses neck and waist; for women it adds the hip. The formula is the same US Navy equation used more widely, applied against service-specific maximum allowances.

Maximum allowable body fat rises with age, reflecting normal changes in body composition. The thresholds used here follow AR 600-9. Standards are revised periodically and services differ, so treat this as preparation rather than an official result.

The tape method is an estimate with a three to four percentage point margin, which matters when someone sits close to the limit. Measurement technique, time of day and hydration all move the number, which is why practising consistent measurement before a real tape test is worthwhile.

Male circumference formulaBF% = 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 x log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 x log10(height)) - 450
Female circumference formulaBF% = 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 x log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 x log10(height)) - 450

How the tape test is conducted

  • Screening first. The tape test is normally only applied when a soldier exceeds the screening table weight for their height and age.
  • Neck. Measured just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly downward at the front, without compressing the skin.
  • Waist, men. At the navel, at the end of a normal exhale, relaxed abdomen.
  • Waist, women. At the point of least abdominal circumference, typically above the navel.
  • Hips, women. At the widest point of the buttocks.
  • Averaging. Measurements are typically taken three times and averaged, rounded per the regulation.

Preparing if you are close to the limit

The circumference method carries a three to four percentage point margin of error, so someone within two points of their limit can pass or fail on measurement technique alone. Practising consistent self-measurement over several weeks is worthwhile, because it shows both your trend and how much your own readings vary. Hydration, recent meals, time of day and posture all move waist circumference by a centimetre or more.

The productive approach is the same as any fat loss: a moderate calorie deficit, protein at 1.6 to 2.2 g per kilogram to protect lean mass under a physical training load, and consistent resistance work. Crash dieting before a tape test costs strength and performance on the fitness test that usually accompanies it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum body fat allowed in the Army?
Under AR 600-9 the limits rise with age. For men they run from 20 percent for the youngest age group to 26 percent for the oldest; for women, 30 to 36 percent across the same groups.
How is the Army tape test measured?
Neck below the larynx and waist at the navel for men, plus hips at the widest point for women, taken relaxed with a non-stretch tape.
Can muscular soldiers fail the tape test?
Yes. A thick waist from trunk musculature raises the estimate, which is a known limitation of circumference methods.
How accurate is the circumference method?
Within roughly three to four percentage points of a DEXA scan for most people, with larger errors at the extremes.
