VO2 Max Calculator

Estimate cardiorespiratory fitness three ways: resting heart rate, the Cooper 12 minute test, or a recent race time.

VO2 max is among the stronger predictors of long-term health outcomes in population research. It responds well to training, particularly a mix of easy aerobic volume and short hard intervals.

Estimating VO2 max without a lab

VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can use oxygen during exercise, expressed in millilitres per kilogram per minute. Laboratory testing is the reference standard; field estimates are considerably less precise but useful for tracking change.

This calculator offers three approaches. The resting heart rate method needs no test and is the roughest. The Cooper 12 minute test is a well-established field test. Estimating from a recent race performance tends to be the most accurate of the three for trained runners.

It is worth caring about because VO2 max is among the stronger predictors of long-term health outcomes in population research, and unlike many markers it responds well to training at any age.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good VO2 max?
For men, roughly 43 to 51 is good and above 57 excellent. For women, 35 to 42 is good and above 48 excellent, with substantial variation by age.
How accurate are VO2 max estimates?
Field estimates carry meaningful error against laboratory testing. Use the trend over months rather than the absolute number.
How do I improve VO2 max?
A mix of large volumes of easy aerobic work and small amounts of hard intervals. Both matter, and most people neglect the easy volume.
Are watch VO2 max readings reliable?
They estimate from heart rate and pace, which handles steady running reasonably and other activities less well. Treat them as a trend.
