Why maintenance falls further than your weight predicts

After a period of dieting, energy expenditure is typically lower than body size alone would predict. This is adaptive thermogenesis, and it is one of the better-documented reasons weight regain is common.

Two things are happening. A smaller body genuinely needs fewer calories, which any equation captures. On top of that, prolonged energy restriction produces a further reduction, driven by lower non-exercise activity, hormonal changes including leptin and thyroid hormones, and improved metabolic efficiency.

The size of that additional gap varies considerably between individuals and with the depth and duration of the diet. Estimates in research range from negligible to several hundred calories daily. This calculator gives an indicative figure; your own weight trend over two to three weeks is the reliable measure.

Frequently asked questions

Is metabolic damage real?
Adaptive thermogenesis is real and measurable. Permanent metabolic damage is not an established phenomenon. Expenditure generally recovers as weight and food intake are restored.
How long does adaptation last?
It diminishes as you return to maintenance eating, though research on long-term weight loss maintainers suggests some reduction can persist for extended periods.
What is reverse dieting?
Gradually raising calories after a diet, commonly by around 5 percent weekly, to return to maintenance while limiting fat regain. Evidence is limited but the approach is low risk.
Why did I regain weight quickly?
Some of it is glycogen and water returning, which happens within days and is not fat. The rest reflects eating above a maintenance level that is now lower than before.
